WHO

WHO?

I’m a who

A person who cares

When a leader treats

His fellow citizens with disrespect.

Misinterpreting deliberately

And ignoring Constitutional rights.

I didn’t see disrespect on the field.

Just the opposite. I saw pain in faces

Of those who love their country and their God.

They met as team members united and proud.

They weren’t burning anything or cursing outloud.

They didn’t disrespect their neighbors or anyone in the crowd.

But someone dared shame these men as they made their claim,

Someone dared disrespect Americans and drenched them with shame,

These were the same men who side by side with American soldiers

And rescued numerous victims trapped in their homes,

Helped with cleanup operations night after night.

Did they do something wrong while they were doing things right?

These brave men united together to point out what needs to be done,

Isn’t it time for peace and setting aside the gun.

The wars are over and it’s time to clean up after the storms,

Just like soldiers, teammates, strong leaders, and all,

We are the examples for the world to see.

Especially how a leader treats you and me.

UNCOMFORTABLE

UNCOMFORTABLE

You say all who disagree

Should leave the country

But I remember hearing you say

Long ago at another harsh time

That you would defend to the death

the right of someone to speak out.

What makes you uncomfortable now?

The protests are not against country or flag

But against racism and violation of rights.

It’s not about our troops or athletes

But learning to talk again in calm discussion,

Our children would benefit from hearing debate

Where anger and hostility are banned along with hate.

No one wants to leave but many want to arrive and stay.

Our country was founded on freedoms we needed

Freedom of speech, let’s talk. Freedom of assembly, let’s stand

And enjoy the freedoms that have been given by blood and tears.

HEY, MR. PRESIDENT

HEY, MR. PRESIDENT!

I don’t care whose bomb is bigger,

Get your hands away from the nuclear trigger.

When negotiations fail and all is lost,

There is no way to calculate the cost.

Somewhere in space mixed with cosmic dust,

Life continues to exist only if there’s love and trust.

But hot-headed men with toys of war

Still threaten us with missiles from afar.

Don’t they know that we all will lose,

No matter which weapons we eventually use?

Mr. President, try thinking but do not speak.

Your tweets are empty and very weak.

I don’t care whose toy is bigger,

Get your hands away from the nuclear trigger.

IS THIS THE TIME

FORGIVE AND FORGET

Time goes by so fast,

And it takes two to let go of the past.

Their lives are not over yet,

If they are ready to forgive and forget.

He’s still got his kids

Though his life is on the skids.

It is not a good time to dump him.

She considers his needs

And why he closes the door.

But she needs to talk, to feel his hurt,

She can’t stand silence anymore.

The children expect presents and fun,

While his life is coming undone.

But it’s not a good time to dump him.

She wonders why their relationship

Is completely off the track

Maybe it is over and done

And they might never get it back!

Birthdays, anniversaries,

All are markers of time.

Is this the time to dump him?

Holidays are coming

And the world is full of joy and peace.

Will wonders never cease?

Is this the time to dump him?

At first she tries to fight

But his barbed words rip her deep.

She thought she could win the war,

But the price for winning is steep.

She stumbles as she walks,

Her voice breaks as she talks.

Her eyes are soft and clear

But her face shows wear and tear.

Her feelings are dripping with hate

Her emotions are burning within,

If he won’t listen

She will find a way to punish him.

Things said are venomous and terse,

As they attack again and again.

But the battle only gets worse.

There is no way either can win.

Is this the time to dump him?

A LAMB WITH GOLDEN FLEECE

A LAMB WITH GOLDEN FLEECE

And lo, I saw a lamb with golden fleece,
Asking for reason, pleading for peace.
I asked my friends, “What does this mean?”
No one could describe what they’d never seen.
The lamb’s eyes were bleeding, swollen and raw,
There must be danger in something she saw.
From the mountains came a man from the East,
With a fierce countenance, and the mark from the beast.
The man asked, “What would it take for a war to start?”
He saluted and said, “I’m ready to blow this world apart!”
I thought about that as I traveled towards the sun,
He was right. The world’s troubles have just begun.
It only takes one crazed leader to light the fuse.
He could be already well-known and all over the news.
The lamb was quiet and then she said,
“Why do you ignore me? Do you wish to be dead?
Three large countries are ready to expand,
Where will they get their new-found land?
Will they destroy the people who live there now?
Will you defend the weak and helpless somehow?
The rules of war say be cautious, you can’t use gas,
Or other weapons of destruction, the threats will pass.
But I know your hearts,” the lamb said sadly.
“Nuclear bombs will be used, and the war will end badly.”
I could see in her eyes how the war would unfold,
Countless men lying on the ground, lifeless and cold.
And the deaths will include mothers, daughters and sons,
No one will be safe until the carnage is done.
There is one final chance for the world to have peace.”
She walked into the sunset in a blaze of golden fleece.
But I heard her words of wisdom coming from high above,
I listened then and thought she said, “It’s all about love.
We must speak up now. Every person must have a voice.
It’s now or never. We have no other choice!”

I’m only a poet trying to make sense of what I see.
I’m not ready for Armageddon and I hope you agree,
We can learn to share the world; it’s not too small for me.
We can’t ignore it much longer unless it’s meant to be.

Words on Fire!

Words
Words (Photo credit: sirwiseowl)

Words on Fire

When my muse comes around to inspire

My words dance with fire

Building castles everywhere

Out of dreams and thin air

Blending new romance with raw desire.

With each tale that demands to be told

Real stories become bold

Allowing characters to act

Mixing fantasy with fact

Grabbing audiences with claws that hold.

Because these words coax and seduce

Strong feelings they produce

Stirring embers deep inside

Where feelings cannot hide

Boiling hearts with their own juice.

My words are powerful on a page

Or when spoken on life’s stage

Gathering no moss as they flow

Becoming stronger as they go

Carrying the discovered wisdom of an age.

My words are restless and never tire

As they pull others from the mire

But they carry a deadly sting

If venom is permitted its full swing

Therefore cautiously I write with fire.

Last Words

Last Words That Were Easy to Remember

(Last words are in parenthesis)

There have been times I’ve said,

Last words I hoped were true,

I said them so sweet they’d be good to eat,

If they were returned by you,

The words (I Love You) were special,

And when I gave you a Valentine’s card,

In the fifth grade that was a problem,

Friends teased me often on the school yard,

When we went on the scuba diving trip,

And you assured me (no sharks) were there,

Why did you get so excited,

When one whispered in your ear?

You got into an argument with your friend,

And you said I could take care of us,

You didn’t tell me he was a karate instructor,

(What happened?)  I got run over by a bus!

Last words were easy to remember,

Especially when their meaning rang true,

In dreams they came to spice up my nights,

But the words I treasured most were (“I do”),

You might have thought I’d have memorized,

Those phrases that were difficult to hear,

But the two words that drove me to the edge,

Were short and simple, (“Yes, dear”),

You were drinking a tea and on your phone,

While driving with your knees,

You said you had (perfect control),

Except for that awful tree,

You didn’t wait as you vowed you’d do,

I don’t want to see your silly grin,

You’ve closed your book one last time,

It’s over, finished, (Amen).

For once I got the last word.

Your Words Are Treasures

A woman and a man performing a high five.

It’s time to clear your mind of clutter,

Of harmful words that you might utter,

Clear the slate of words that sting,

Think of terms that love might bring,

When the air is filled with words of praise,

They warm the nights and soften the days,

Those words build relationships deep,

Forging bonds that your heart will keep,

A base composed of appreciation and trust,

With treasures that won’t break or rust,

Positive words will increase self-worth,

There is a shortage of those on earth,

Those sweet words that build self-esteem,

Are given to you when angels dream,

Your body language and tone of voice,

Can strike fear or give cause to rejoice,

Show mercy to others as given to you,

What goes around, comes around, you know that too,

Let terms of endearment sweeten your tongue,

Let your kindness be legendary, your praises sung,

If respect is given to both young and old,

Your hair might turn silver, but your heart will stay gold,

Encourage others to search for a star,

Give them a boost if they can’t reach that far,

And let them know your heart, tell them you care,

You’ll love them forever, and always be there.

The Preacher and the Music Director’s Wife

The preacher was arrogant to the younger crowd,

But to those with deep pockets, he appeared less proud,

Damon’s sermons were powerful, he turned them up by degrees,

He was clearly annoyed by those who dared defy his decrees,

Feared and secretly hated by the rest of the church staff,

Except by Samantha, who would mock him and laugh,

She found reasons to tease him, to watch him turn red,

Yet she’d bake him cookies and bring him sweet bread,

I wasn’t  sure but I thought she admired his position of power,

She was beautiful, smart, and already in full flower,

She was open to all who wanted to know about her family tiffs,

And frequently proclaimed she had all of the spiritual gifts,

Her husband, the music director, turned a blind eye,

Adam wanted to confront her, but didn’t dare try,

It was clear she was restless, and loved him no more,

She wanted to hurt him deeply by declaring a spiritual war,

Adam was persistent and continued to go out of his way,

To give her thoughtful presents and constantly say,

“I love you,” but she ignored him each and every time,

She hated his goodness and treated him like swine,

Adam was special and crowds showed to hear him sing,

His voice resonated, entertained, as he sang to his king,

Why Samantha did not feel the power, no one really knew,

The more the crowds loved him the more her hatred grew,

Samantha often said, “I want to go somewhere without you,”

Adam didn’t take her seriously because his love was true,

His rebuttal,“I can never leave here, I’m treated like a son,”

And in her heart Samantha knew, her time with him was done,

The preacher, on the other hand, was abusive to his wife,

Damon was heard to say, “A wife must obey all her life,”

Mary would murmur quietly, “I’m sorry, much harder I’ll try,”

Sometimes Mary would show up with bruises, black and blue,

She always covered for him, but I knew her words were untrue,

“It was my fault,” she might say, “I was not being loyal” or “I fell,”

It was my opinion that the preacher had a one way ticket to hell,

One day when Damon thought he was alone with his wife,

“You disagreed with me! That’s disloyal!” his voice cutting like a knife,

He berated her at length and ended the tirade with a slap,

“Now clean up this mess,” he snapped, as her nose bled onto her lap,

She noticed me in the shadows, “Shhhh. You’ll only make it worse,”

I couldn’t just accuse him. I needed more than chapter and verse,

Damon’s temper was legendary but church officials looked the other way,

As long as the church was growing Damon would have his say,

To Damon, all wives and daughters were part of a game,

It was rumored that they were afraid when he called them by name,

Except for Samantha who talked as if she cared about nothing,

She scared him with her reckless talk about acting and dancing,

Always in short skirts and low cut blouses, she sat in the front pew,

Damon often stammered and sputtered because of the view,

When some of the elderly women criticized her just a bit,

She said, “God gave it to me and the devil can’t make me hide it.”

It didn’t take long for Damon to succumb to her charms,

At night he dreamed of holding her tightly in his arms,

Tossing and turning, he was restless and could find no relief,

The next day he confronted her, “Your rebellion has caused me grief,

Did you not learn a lesson from Delilah and Jezebel?

If you don’t mend your ways, you’re going straight to hell,”

He hesitated, “You need to see me for counseling so we can talk,”

She laughed at him, “You’d like to have me behind a door that locks,”

“If you were in my house for a week,” he sputtered, “You’d learn,”

“You’ve got a little bad boy in you,” she said, “You’d have to earn,

Any chance you got with me, so talk to my husband, then we’ll see,”

What chance did he have to convince her husband to agree?

After one of his sermons he decided to talk to Adam, man to man,

“You’re neglecting your duty, she’s not under your command,

She runs your house, I don’t think you have much to say,

If she was under my roof, just for a week, I’d get her to obey,

We might be happier if we switched partners for awhile,

I’d tame your wife and she’d come back with a smile,”

Adam was shocked, he couldn’t believe what he had heard,

“I couldn’t do that,” he muttered, “it’s going against the Word,”

Samantha chuckled, “You are pathetic and can’t satisfy me,

I wouldn’t have to be near you, for one week I’d be free,”

Adam was infuriated, he didn’t like Samantha’s retort,

But he made a mistake when he turned to Mary for support,

Mary was still bruised from Damon’s last series of blows,

To be away from Damon she would have kissed the devil’s toes,

Mary said, “Your wife will learn to appreciate loving kindness in a man,

Now, she’s young and blind, she really doesn’t understand,”

That made sense to Adam.  His wife had never given him respect,

He knew he loved her and would give her everything without neglect,

For that reason, he wavered, for a week he could let her go,

But in the back of his mind was a small voice saying, “No, No, NO!”

What choice did he have when all three stared him down?

But his heart refused to give in, he was honor bound,

“This is all wrong. Samantha will have to make her own choice,”

“And you, Damon, have been listening to the devil’s voice!”

Angrily Adam turned and left. He needed to find somewhere to pray,

Someplace where sunlight poured over him, where evil couldn’t stay,

Evil would stay away from exposure and find all the secret places,

It had already captured three of them, he could see it on their faces,

Adam knew he could not control, the choice Samantha would make,

But within his heart he felt at peace, he knew the path he’d take,

Damon wasn’t seen around the church. He claimed to be really ill,

But rumors flew from house to house about how his nights were filled,

His name was bandied about, giving the church ill-fame,

He was asked to go away, where none would hear his name,

Mary had fled that very day to escape her life of abuse,

Disappearing somewhere far off, safe as a nameless recluse,

Samantha left Adam for glittering lights, success always on the brink,

She’d call from time to time, usually when she had too much to drink,

She said she might return some day, if he would take her back,

She just needed a few more months, until she was on a winning track,

Adam endured the jibes and sneers, ignoring the months of lies,

Gradually pity was exchanged for respect, he was deemed saintly and wise,

But he never remarried, more lessons he chose not to learn,

He had kept a journal each day of his life, and now he wanted it to burn,

He had finally forgiven Samantha for all she had said and done,

It had taken years for his inner battle to be won,

Now that it was over, he wanted his stories to feed the flames,

But I couldn’t destroy his work, I just changed the names,

I’ve come to realize that learning lessons does not end,

But there’s no reason to repeat them again and again,

If there’s a moment when a story rings clear and true,

I’ll take it to heart and growth for me will ensue,

Adam’s story won’t be wasted if others do, too.

Your Eyes Speak From the Heart

These Words
Image via Wikipedia
I hear the words you are saying,

But your eyes talk too.

They tell a different truth.

Your mouth whispers what you want me to hear.

False words of undying love,

Words claiming forever.

Your eyes, your beautiful eyes,

Tell the whole story,

From beginning to end,

With all the details at hand.

Your lips are convincing

But they change their mind,

And move without the truth.

Your eyes, portals to the soul,

Speak from the heart.

They cannot lie,

They separate themselves from excuses,

They speak straight and true.

Oblivious to your silver tongue,

Those orbs contradict the words

That slide so easily from your mouth.

I do not believe your words,

But I believe your eyes,

They speak from the heart.
