DEBBIE

SHE FORGOT TO WRITE HER NAME

She was in a rush, at least walking fast.

I thought she might walk on past,

But she didn’t.

She became intrigued by what I was asking.

Asking questions about what her friends knew,

And when they knew it, sort of presidential questions.

“Who are you, and why are you questioning them?” she asked.

“It’s a fun way of finding out more information about friends,” I said.

“What do you mean?” she asked, evidently not convinced.

“Put down ten questions about yourself with answers,” I said.

“Everybody has secrets, more than what you read.”

She was convinced suddenly, and her questions flowed like water in a stream,

Tumbling one after another, as in a rapidly growing dream.

“I want to see what you see when you talk about me.”

Then she blurted, “I want you to make a poem about me!”

In case you are ready to assign blame,

Debbie is her name. Also known as ‘LIL Debbie.

She loves being a grandma with nine kids,

And loves her own three children, if you should ask.

She loves to travel, evidently enjoying the company of others,

Every day she does extra things that make people smile,

 whether it’s a friend, a patient or a stranger.

She’s married and she loves the food her husband cooks.

Debbie is a shopper extraordinaire, using coupons to have fun

But still stay on a budget.

Debbie was a single mom with three children and three jobs

For many years.  That kept her strong through the years of tears.

Debbie might ask anyone some questions, as I found out.

She wants answers that don’t leave any doubts.

She had to scramble to keep up with her kids,

And she learned to be a multitasker in order to cope.

Debbie is an optimist with lots of hope.

If you want more information look for her smile,

Then sit her right down and chat for a while.

PERCEPTION

Ugly

I believed I grew up in an ugly town,

A small community tucked in a small corner

Of nowhere,

Where smiles stayed hidden

And were rarely found.

The land was hot and dry in summer,

But cold and wet in winter.

Everyone said it was ugly

And I believed it to be the center

Of a cosmic mistake.

Where was the beauty?

The town pulled at me

Tied me down,

Trapped me in webs of misery

And kept me bound.

“Leave it. Leave it,” I was warned.

“There are places to see, places to be,

Stay away from this town where hope cannot see.”

For years I searched for beauty and smiles,

Crossed oceans and mountains and countless miles.

I did not find the city of my dreams.

Happiness did not exist,

All cities were the same.

I returned to my city,

Weary and worn from my search.

I had learned to smile, learned to enjoy,

Learned to change my attitude.

I greeted each person I chanced to meet,

With a smile.

I looked around and found

Changes in my ugly town.

In the summer it was kissed by the sun,

And the cold in winter was also fun.

This was not a town of misery,

But a town of hope for all to see.

Each smile I encountered brightened my way,

And the town grew more beautiful day by day.

My town, a place to live and grow,

An Eden, a garden below.

Beauty is now found inside of me,

And my smiles are there for all to see.

Without Her…..

She’s in my dreams,

Filling me with anticipation,

Delighting me with her smile,

Soothing me with her warmth,

I will not forget her,

Waiting in my memory,

Returning night after night,

Speaking words of wisdom and love,

I’m not complete without her,

Sharing our experiences,

Wrapping our future together,

Pledging our vows to each other,

She is already missed,

Lying there still and quiet,

Smiling at my tears,

Staring up at nothing at all.

My Smiles Within

Sometimes my face hides my smiles within,

As I remember moments and special friends,

They’re all I have to keep me warm,

But they’re enough when memories swarm,

“See that puppy!” I shrieked out loud,

You would have thought I’d draw a crowd,

“Wow!” when excited at my first kiss,

Her eyes were closed in momentary bliss,

Each child born always brought a grin,

How could I hold back the happiness within?

Even at funerals I couldn’t suppress a smile,

As friends passed on, “I’ll see you in awhile,”

So now my thoughts are full of smiles,

I can stretch them out for miles and miles,

Weathered, worn, my face appears grim,

But hidden beneath this tired old skin,

Are hopes and dreams of things I sought,

And wrapped around them are smiling thoughts.

You Weren’t On My Schedule

I passed you today as I took my morning walk,

You looked cold and hungry but I didn’t want to talk,

I was looking up, you were looking down,

I was wearing a smile, you were wearing a frown,

I didn’t take the time to ask you what was wrong,

I was In the middle of humming a very special song,

I couldn’t be interrupted, for I had too much to do,

But I promised to ask sometime what was bothering you,

No, not next week, for there are things I have booked,

I checked my schedule in case anything’s been overlooked,

“How are you?”, “I’m fine,” but I really didn’t have time to chat,

I had people to see and things to do, you know, this and that,

I was eager to share my world with someone, but no, not now,

You took away my joy because you were in my way somehow,

You looked awful, perhaps struggling to find something to say,

But when tears rolled down your cheeks, you nearly ruined my day,

“Good grief!” I muttered, but I know I wasn’t being rude,

I chose to be patient because I wanted to keep my good mood,

“Shape up, I don’t have time for this,” I snapped in dismay,

“Oh, my!”  You were looking sad and putting on a display,

“I don’t care what your problem is, you’ll just have to wait,”

“I’ve got to go and smile at folks, and now you’ve made me late!”

I rushed away, leaving you behind, despair plainly on your face,

I was hoping you’d find someplace else, be gone without a trace,

When I returned you weren’t there, much to my relief,

I didn’t want to see you again or put up with your grief,

Life is short and there was so much I still needed to do,

Did you expect me to waste my time, on someone like you?

Outside the sun is bright, what a beautiful Easter day,

Yet inside my joy is false, I feel shame for my deceptive ways,

When you were hungry and in pain, I wasn’t there for you,

I was thinking just about myself, and all the things to do,

I cheated you by turning away, I should have listened with my heart,

Yesterday won’t come again, so I’m asking for a brand new start,

I really want to love others more, wherever they might be,

The best way that I know how, is to begin with you and me.

One Autograph for a Ten Year Old

Leukemia cells.

A ten year old boy lies quietly in bed,

He’d rather be outside playing instead,

His spirit is strong as he welcomes each day,

As he looks at the tubes that keep him at bay,

His smile is there even when he’s in pain,

His treatments are dreadful but he rarely complains,

He’s a brave young man unless tempted to cry,

When he sees the fear in someone’s eyes,

Too young for cancer to put him in strife,

But it’s there uninvited to control his life,

The doctors are doing the best they can do,

They’re waiting to see if the chemo comes through,

Being careful with our words to keep his spirits high,

To meet his wishes the family would like to try,

Signatures he’s requested to place on his board,

From celebrities who are willing of their own accord,

Although bedridden, his eyes would dance,

Knowing someone out there gives him a chance,

Leukemia is not an easy disease to subdue,

Signatures would lift his spirits, perhaps from you,

If you’re a star in sports, music, or screen,

It will make his day for your name to be seen,

Politicians and writers, you’re included too,

Please be sure you include what you do,

If you’re a friend or relative of a fabulous star,

Send those autographs from wherever you are,

His condition is critical, he’s confined to a bed,

The hospital has limits, and no visitors can tread,

If you can meet his request just simply reply,

Mail a short note with autograph to the little guy,

If you would like his address to be sent,

Ask me for his information in a comment.

I’m Not Fooled by You

You stand there with that smug smile,

And pretend you are listening,

But I’m not fooled by you,

You are simply waiting for me to finish,

So you can say what you rehearsed,

Before I asked you to discuss us.

Don’t think I’m fooled by you,

For I’ve seen you a thousand times,

Giving out messages without listening,

Never appreciating our differences,

Always sure you had the right answers,

Ignoring tone of voice, gestures, and words,

Yes, words that poured out from my heart,

I’m not fooled by you,

You think by being logical and advising,

That you are in control of our relationship,

But feelings don’t have to be logical or reasonable,

You tell me what you want me to hear or to know,

But when you hide the truth, or deny my feelings,

The beautiful ways we could relate come to a halt,

Perhaps you’re fooled by me,

If I gave you the impression you could trash me,

Put me down because you thought I was weak,

Maybe you didn’t like my confidence,

Because you were weak inside and attacked,

Afraid I’d find out that you were pretending to be strong,

Perhaps you were fooled by me,

I already knew you had to lean on my strength,

But that was okay, for I also leaned on you,

We have been wasting energy trying to discuss,

Where the you and me should become us,

I know that pain is necessary to grow,

But I am so tired of hearing your answers,

When you haven’t heard my questions,

Perhaps you thought I was fooled by you,

You were sure I would fit your mold,

You were so calm and so in control,

But you did not try to accept who I am,

I wanted us to share so much,

But my feelings are still bottled up,

And I think I might explode,

Don’t be surprised if I ignore you,

When I see you my heart bleeds,

But no longer will I heed,

My heart was fooled for awhile,

But you can’t beguile,

With your smile,

Anymore.
