THROUGH YOUR EYES

I want to travel the world through your eyes,

Finding love and treasures beyond the skies.

My poems may tell of adventures I found,

But my heart will always be homeward bound.

Everything I am, you taught me to feel,

Without your love, nothing is real.

My heart is packed to travel light,

I wish,  I wish, with all my might,

To be with you all through the night.

I miss your laughter, your love, your charms,

You should be next to me, within my arms.

I am growing older with each passing day,

And yet my love grows stronger in every way.

You make me need your love within,

And yes, it’s true, I miss skin to skin.

I claim your heart as I dream about you,

Dancing in darkness until morning dew.

All my life I waited for your kiss,

But I never believed the passion would be like this.

I’ll be in your heart and your dreams too,

Walking, dancing, and loving you.

I’ll travel the world as you cross the sea,

But when you need love, come home to me.

CRINGE

Whenever I make a huge mistake I cringe inside, upset with myself for making such a blunder.  I find many mistakes in my life and I try to correct them as I go.  Unfortunately, I’m falling behind.  I can’t catch them all. My only consolation is that my repairs turn into experience and experience turns into wisdom.  And if all else fails, I will sit quietly and let everyone think I’m wise.

I cringe when I think there is so much I can do to help others. There is so little time and so much I could do. I know I don’t help enough. I used to complain I was the one who was hurt, but I’ve learned to complain less.

I think I was born lonely with a huge empty place in my heart waiting to be filled with love. Others couldn’t make me happy with shovelfuls of love. I couldn’t wait for that.  I had to bring love to the world and the empty space will fill up.  Love always replaces itself. I decided that if I do kind deeds, love others with passion, and treat all people with respect, love will be there flowing through me.

I cringe when I think of wasted years, wasted tears, all because I held on to negative ideas and pain, when I could have used the power within to help others.  To love others without reward keeps my heart overflowing.  I can reach out to friends, family, and strangers. This world is tough and I am ready to help.

BUT I DIDN’T

I never told you I loved you.

It would have been so simple

To make it very clear.

But I didn’t.

If I had called you dear,

You might have known.

But I didn’t.

I kept my feelings inside

Wrapped in my foolish pride.

Because I loved you.

I didn’t dream your love was so big

That you could love me too.

When I was examined

The doctor implied I was almost dead.

There was nothing he could do.

I thought I was hanging by a thread.

I wanted to tell you I loved you.

But I didn’t.

I underestimated your heart.

Before I died I wanted to be sure

You would be happy with life,

Somebody’s precious wife.

I introduced you to my best friend.

I wish I hadn’t.

The doctor was wrong,

My heart is strong.

And my friend looks very content

With the woman who was meant

For me.

If I had loved you for one fleeting moment

My dreams would be full,

But I didn’t.

I’ll Choose to Burn the Ice Away

I’ll Choose to Burn the Ice Away

Why is it so hard to love you?

My cold heart snuffs the flames.

I want to respond with tenderness and love,

And call you sweeter names.

Why do I let the storm win out?

My blood rushes to my ears.

I want to demonstrate my love for you,

And gently wash away your tears.

Why do I disregard the condition of my heart?

My priorities have always come first.

I want to show you how important you are,

And satisfy love’s growing thirst.

Why do I wait to prove my love is true?

My motivation to love has been weak.

Yet I’m still the man you chose to wed,

I can give you the romance you seek.

I’m tired of the excuses I make.

My love lies dormant inside.

I’ll choose to lead my heart back home,

And forget my foolish pride.

I will choose to think good things of you.

Sparks of romance will turn to flames.

I’ll be thoughtful and you’ll feel loved.

Our love will never be the same.

I’ll wake in the morning with thoughts of you.

My warmth will seek you out.

And all the questions I once had,

Love will erase each and every doubt.

If you, too, choose to stir the embers,

The flames will reach the sky.

For love that learns to burn again,

Will grow sweeter as time goes by.

What Is This Thing Called Love?

Crazy Little Thing Called Love

What is This Thing Called Love

What is this thing called love

That rips and tears at my heart?

Knowing how much love hurts me,

Why did I allow love to start?

Yet what is loneliness but a need for love

A void that cries to be filled?

An absence of love that teases in dreams

A restlessness that longs to be stilled?

Why do I have tears late at night

Endlessly flowing down my cheeks?

Is it because I’m desperate for love

And for the companionship my heart seeks?

When will romance come my way

Giving me a brand new start?

I don’t want to see a barren world

With no connections to my heart.

How do I find the one for me

Who waits for a heart like mine?

Where will I discover what is true

And find that new love divine?

I’ll wait and hope for ages yet,

I know she is somewhere near.

Soon she’ll be within my arms

Where I keep things I hold dear.

What is this thing called love?

No answer will suffice.

For it seems to be a combination

Of flames, sacrifice, and ice.

Lucky Indeed

Lucky Indeed

I thought I was a hammer made of steel,

But she softened my heart and made me feel,

I was a restless knight riding a spirited steed,

But she quenched my fires and fulfilled my needs.

Gentle as the mist drifting in from the sea,

Uncontrollable as a flooding river, she’s wild and free,

Cleansing as the rain, freefalling from the sky,

She’s constantly changing; I’m a lucky guy.

Warm as the sunshine splashing across the land,

Teasing with kisses, the kind I understand,

Calm even in a storm, helping those in need,

She’s right there beside me; I’m lucky indeed.

Straight as a road that guides me on my way,

She is the love I’ve been seeking until today,

Bringing a fire that rages deep inside,

I am a lucky man and very satisfied.

If Your Heart

If Your Heart Was a Door

If your mind was a book, I’d read it,

Turning page after page, absorbing every word,

Hoping the most exciting chapters included me,

If your eyes were deep pools, I’d dive in them,

Splashing around like an otter, enjoying every moment,

Swimming in circles of love to be noticed by you,

If your lips were berries, I’d taste them,

Remembering the warmth of our summer passion,

Savoring the richness of your tender kisses,

If your breasts were two trees, I’d fly to them,

Settling in the branches, finding comfort and peace,

Forgetting for awhile all the troubles of the world,

If your heart was a door, I’d open it with sincere words,

Sharing my world, my life, my heart, and my love,

Wanting my time with you to last forever.

Her Eyes, Her Smile, Her Hair

She was the one I dreamed of,

But the one I couldn’t have,

I kept my feelings tucked inside,

Each time I came near her,

A part of my heart died,

I loved everything about her,

Her eyes, her smile, her hair,

In the dark when I was alone,

She was my lady fair,

Oft when we were together,

She would give a friendly hug,

My heart would flip excitedly,

But all I could do was shrug,

She belonged to another,

She was as faithful as could be,

Yet somehow I always knew,

He didn’t love her as much as me,

He treated her very badly,

She was his personal slave,

He tired of her eventually,

And drove her to her grave,

The love I had she never knew,

For he was always between,

But in another life in another time,

I would have claimed her as my queen,

There is little warmth left in my heart,

Each day it drops a degree,

Without her presence in my life,

There is nothing left for me,

I cannot endure without sleep again,

Yet my dreams beg for another chance,

Is there someone who could love me back,

And fuel the fires of romance,

This world is too harsh to face alone,

I want my heart to flare,

I want to love someone as she is,

Her eyes, her smile, her hair,

In the night I want to hold her close,

And feel her heart start to race,

We’ll share sweet love with new hope,

Together the world we’ll face,

The rest of my life will be about love,

No longer will I stand aside,

I want to share love with someone new,

And stir my fires inside.

Save a Bag of Popcorn for Me

She reminded me of popcorn,

Never knowing how to relax,

Jumping up and ready to go,

Moving to the max,

She could dance all night,

All eyes glued to her every move,

That’s the way it always was,

As she got into her groove,

I could see other men wanted her,

But I had no time for jealousy,

For no matter what anyone said or did,

She always went home with me,

She treated me like I was special,

I honored her as my queen,

I loved her on the weekends,

And all the days between,

She wasn’t a prima donna,

She was always at my side,

She was my best friend, lover, wife,

I could not disguise my pride,

A doctor broke the news one day,

She had a suspicious bump,

There was nothing to do but wait and see,

It turned out to be a cancerous lump,

The cancer had metastasized,

But we pretended she was free,

Until death claimed her one day,

And ripped my heart from me,

The only woman I ever loved,

Was taken too early from me,

I am left with empty arms,

And with only her memory,

Every time I hear that familiar pop,

And see popcorn start to jump,

I brush the tears from my eyes,

As I remember that awful bump,

Her final words before she left,

“I’ll love you, dear, for all eternity,

So enjoy life, whether short or long,

And save a bag of popcorn for me.”

Death and Destruction

Death and Destruction

I chose to be open, knowing what could happen right from the start,

Without the protection of stone walls I had a vulnerable heart,

And when death and destruction arrived on the very same day,

I took them in voluntarily, that’s all I can say,

My heart was unguarded and death’s attack was swift,

Vicious puncture wounds were left and the sudden lift,

Blood draining, life waning, in the aftermath was fear,

Destruction’s devices were different, slow, abrasive, and clear,

Humiliation, fear of being left, or not being good enough,

My heart struggled to find even ground, somewhere out of the rough,

Without someone to lean upon I searched for ways to reach the sky,

But loneliness filled my nights while my unfulfilled dreams marched by,

Yet when mornings brought the sun I smiled as I soaked in the heat,

Each day I faced the world again with many experiences to greet,

Neither love’s demise nor slow destruction would pin me for long,

I was determined to love again for my heart still pounded strong,

Though wave after wave had crashed against my heart’s core,

I still stood, a lighthouse beaming from the ravished shore,

As I round another turn, it’s clear what lies ahead,

I could wind up with the roses, or eat dust again instead,

Love will forward surge even beyond the finish pole,

For I will give what it takes to reach my own true goal,

Love marches on with opportunities life so freely gives,

I’ll stay the course and keep on track, for love in my heart still lives.
