“I Was All She Needed”

“Tell me your story,” I said to him,

“Perhaps I can help your case,”

His voice shook as he began,

“Five years are hard to replace,

I shouldn’t be here, she’s to blame,

It was her fault, you know,

She made me mad and I lost my cool,

Even though I loved her so,

I knew she was my true love,

From the very first moment we met,

She was different than the others,

And not the kind I’d forget,

Her laughter was the kind that haunted,

Her voice found its way into my heart,

She made an impression from the beginning,

I vowed silently that we’d never part,

Her smile was meant for me alone,

She chose me that first day,

Of course she never said that,

I just knew she wanted it that way,

She peeled away my protective layers,

Her thoughts touched my inner core,

She permeated my entire being,

And left me wanting more,

She had no need for others,

There was no one else but me,

She learned to keep me company,

And show her loyalty,

I treated her very special,

With gifts to prove she was mine,

As long as she knew I was in control,

She could earn some free time,

She allowed her friends to disrespect me,

I could see it in their glares,

They tried to get her away from me,

They didn’t know I was aware,

I told her friends to leave my house,

In spite of her tearful pleas,

I didn’t like the way she talked to me,

She had to apologize on hands and knees,

I didn’t mean to beat her,

It was her fault, you know,

But she said she would leave me,

Even though I loved her so,

My tears fell in torrents,

My heart shriveled up in shame,

If she had done what she was told,

There would be no reason for blame,

The world is barren without her,

I can’t get her out of my head,

If she had cared as much about love,

I wouldn’t have shot her dead,

I still have hopes of finding love,

Several women have been writing to me,

I’ll show them what’s best for them,

As soon as I leave the penitentiary,

Each promised to give unconditional love,

Along with their undying loyalty,

That’s all I ever demanded from anyone,

And, there’ll be no one else but me,”

I learned a lot listening to him,

About his life and why he was there,

It wasn’t his fault why he was locked up,

But society just didn’t care.

When A Parent Leaves

My daughter’s tears greet me,

So I decide to be grimly silent,

Rather than probe and see,

What she harbors and doesn’t vent,

Perhaps this time it’s much the same,

With time suspended in her world,

I think she’ll tell me I am to blame,

For all the troubles that were unfurled,

Nothing is spoken as she stares,

While the tension between us builds,

Should I tell her I still care,

And try to break through her tearful shield?

Her teddy bear is tight within her grasp,

As she endures time that slips away,

All the reasons I left are under clasp,

Waiting to be discussed on another day.

Run Where The Flowers Grow

I couldn’t believe my eyes,

Dad had brought home a surprise,

A black and white cocker spaniel,

Just a puppy, but she meant the world to me,

She was happy, playful, and made me smile,

Lady came when I called her, eager to please,

We were two friends, always at ease,

The two of us discovered the world anew,

Bonded by our hearts, our friendship grew,

Sniffing flowers, chasing birds,

I read stories and she listened to every word,

When she was two she followed me down,

The dirt roads to the grocery store in our town,

We encountered few cars that hot summer day,

Crossing the two lane county road on our way,

Before I got groceries the owner and I had a debate,

But he said, “No dogs allowed. She’ll have to wait,”

When I looked for her, she had crossed the street,

Busily sniffing flowers, or looking for bugs to eat,

My first thought was, “She shouldn’t be over there.”

Without thinking, I whistled, loud and clear,

The shrill sound hanging expectantly in the air,

It was then that I saw a speeding car,

And realized that it wasn’t very far,

At the same time I saw Lady raise her head,

And obediently towards me she sped,

Smiling with every stride,

“Stop, Lady, stop!” I wish I’d cried,

But I was frozen, watching this nightmarish scene,

The car and Lady, the gap closing in between,

There was a loud “Whump!”

Time stopped and I had no need for air,

The car had hit Lady and the driver seemed unaware,

He slowed, then sped up, I knew he didn’t care,

I ran to her and dropped to my knees,

“Lady, get up! I’m sorry, please,”

But I held a lifeless form tight,

Wishing with all my might,

That this was just a bad dream in the night,

I walked home in a trance,

Angry at myself for what I had done,

“Why did I whistle without a glance?

Why had I done this to my friend?”

Blaming myself over and over again,

 Tears streaming down my face,

Somehow managing to carry her to our place,

Where Mom took the groceries,

Telling me to hold Lady for a few minutes more,

Until I collapsed spiritless on the floor,

The next day a private ceremony with a prayer,

Only family was invited there,

My heart pounded and my head hurt,

And with each shovelful of dirt,

I thought I could hear a whistle blow,

Before I left, I leaned down and whispered softly,

“Run, Lady, run, where the flowers grow.”
