Two Gossamer Wings

The storm raged throughout the night,
The thunder was loud and the lightning was bright,
I slept in the basement to avoid the worst,
For I was of the opinion that hell had burst,
Straight line wind gusts of sixty or more,
Had blown a tree over and knocked open my door,
When morning dawned I cleared the debris,
And said a short prayer about the death of a tree,
The sun was shining and the sky was clear,
But I heard a sound that seemed very near,
At first I guessed it had to be a mouse,
But I knew for certain it was in my house,
A baseball bat was in my hand just to be sure,
For I remembered the tree had made my house less secure,
From room to room I searched for the sound,
I’d gone through most of the house and nothing was found,
“My bedroom!” The thought jolted my mind,
I tightened my grip, not sure what I’d find,
The door was open and the lights were on,
The shape under the covers had to be someone,
As I got closer I slowly raised the bat,
I was slightly afraid, but don’t tell anyone that,
Carefully I pulled back the sheet and to my surprise,
A woman stared at me with two large luminous eyes,
Her skin was glowing and I could tell at a glance,
I’d never seen anyone like her, even by chance,
She was startled by my appearance, I tried to calm her fears,
It was at that moment I noticed her tall pointed ears,
Without any warning I kissed her ripe ruby lips,
Her eyes grew even larger when she felt my fingertips,
Pushing aside the covers she leaped up and hovered in the air,
Mesmerized by her beauty, I gasped to see her bare,
She wore no make-up, no bracelets or shiny rings,
But behind her back fluttered two gossamer wings,
An angel or fairy queen, I didn’t know for sure,
Because at that moment my thoughts were not pure,
As her mood changed, her color changed too,
I was glad to see she now had a warmer hue,
She was offering herself to one without wings,
Perhaps she knew I could do other things,
She smiled at me coyly and I almost burst,
My heart was pounding wildly, I was at my worst,
Her wings beat steadily as she stayed out of reach,
“If you want me, then it’s patience I’ll teach,”
We dined, danced, and talked for awhile,
Different worlds didn’t matter, I could tell by her smile,
Later in the night she fluffed up a nest,
I thought she was tired and needed her rest,
Instead she drew me close and wrapped her wings around,
She took me on a flight, somewhere heaven bound,
Her slow release kept me under her spell,
I didn’t know whether I’d reached heaven or hell,
That night she taught me much about certain things,
Inside I was flying even without gossamer wings,
She left late one night after a storm rolled in,
Desiring to be free and fly with the wind,
Now I stand in each storm waiting for her return,
My heart is empty without her and for her I yearn.

Devil or Angel?
From her window she watched,
As he strolled by each day,
Until he was completely out of sight,
Before she would lie down and pray,
“Oh, dear Lord,” she would say,
“He got to me again today,
If I don’t change how I think,
I won’t be going heaven’s way,”
The warmth that radiated inside,
As she studied his manly chest,
That warmth became a raging fire,
As she thought about all the rest,
Her dreams in the dark were of him,
She could feel his arms locked tight,
She had no doubts, she was totally sure,
She would share her bed one night,
As she stared from her window,
One day he glanced back and saw,
Her gaze raking over him wild and free,
Her thoughts beyond the law,
Her intense longing was clear to see,
What could he do but turn around,
She opened her door and greeted him,
They embraced without one sound,
Clothing could not keep them apart,
Soon it was skin against skin,
And all the passion stored away,
Exploded and was released within,
They spent that day in passion’s throes,
Navigators with much to explore,
No matter which direction either went,
Their bodies begged for more,
Happy, content, and physically spent,
He left her without a goodbye,
He walked bravely into a cold world,
Where men are not supposed to cry,
For she had stirred the flames,
Of a heart long grown cold,
And bought it to life again,
For his heart needed someone to hold,
She watched him walk away,
Every step showed confidence and spring,
As he approached, men and women stepped aside,
For he had the confidence of a king,
Devil or angel, she had forgotten her role,
She had so much love to give away,
If she passed someone needy on the street,
There surely would be hell to pay,
But for one day love reigned supreme,
And a man lost his worries and cares,
If she found him with his guard down,
And caught him unaware.

Angels Above and Angels on Earth
I always
seem to get in trouble,
All the way
up to my ears,
That’s when
I call on angels,
To calm my persistent
fears,
I don’t know
when to expect them,
I don’t know
where they’ll be,
I just know
they’ve got my back,
And places I
can’t see,
They might
show up to help me drive,
Some cold
and lonesome night,
One might be
a hitchhiker I’ve picked up,
While I’m
doing what is right,
Or distract
me from becoming involved,
In a friend’s
family feud,
While
another angel helps patch things up,
If I don’t
intrude,
Yet it might
take a hundred strong,
Staying busy
as a bee,
For I seem
to have star-crossed path,
I hope it’s
just me,
For if you,
too, have crossed the line,
Where danger
is always in view,
Then angels above
and angels on earth,
Need to
watch out for me and you.

Yes, Tis True
Oft I tend
to ignore,
The angels
among us,
For they tug
at my conscience,
Right to the
very core,
They pull me
in nobler directions,
Out of my
selfish self,
Until my
heart turns loose compassion,
With few
strings left,
There is no
better explanation,
For what I
have learned,
Angels are watching
over me,
And they work
hard for wings earned,
Angels that
are grounded,
Will stay
afoot I’ll bet,
For I am far
from perfect,
My feeble
ways are set,
My heart
calls out to angels,
To fill its
empty rooms,
But my
vanity has grown big and bold,
Over my life
it looms,
And angels
that I’ve known so well,
Over years
that quickly fly,
Wait at the
corners of my life,
Helping me
climb on by,
I might tell
you once or often,
There are
angels among us, tis true,
They come in
many guises,
They’re
there for me and you.

An Angel Is Watching Over Her
She is
vibrant and alive,
Her youth
shows,
An angel is watching over her,
For he
knows,
That her
life is yet to live,
The angel
calls her name,
Tries to
convince her,
That life is
no game,
She has
plans, so much to do,
Life can’t
wait,
She has love
to give,
And years to
follow her fate,
The curtain
of life is woven strong,
And it has
to be,
For life
courses through her veins,
And her
angel sees,
Her world
laid out before her,
Each and
every day,
He’ll guide
and protect her,
For she has
reasons to stay,
Her life
will ring true,
Until she
completes her list to do,
She’ll look
back and smile,
At all the
things she did worthwhile.

They Exist
Though sometimes in the shadow,
Waiting for a chance to bestow,
Pearls of wisdom and awards too,
Some for me and some for you,
There are angels in our midst,
Yes, these angels really exist,
As poets and writers emerge,
These angels encourage and urge,
All authors to write about life,
From the depths of strife,
Or tell of demons in the night,
Who escaped when you decided to fight,
Describe the inner beauty of a child,
Mountains of snow or weather mild,
Sensitive we poets are,
Afraid of criticism and words that scar,
Yet we are joined at the heart,
Filling the net with our art,
There are angels who say,
What I need to hear on a very bad day,
“Good job, great work, we like you,
Please submit another poem, too.”
“Because you are unique in what you say,
Please stop and visit another day,”
I don’t hear the fluttering of wings,
But I know a lot about these things,
Kind words in the world are sometimes rare,
But the angels among us really care,
Trying to touch all with words of gold,
And helping newer angels their wings unfold,
Who are these angels, you ask of me?
Their presence is very plain to see,
For in their comments are jewels and gold,
Encouraging, urging, with words so bold.
